The polymeric instruments were used in the transmission equipments since 1960s. The uses of polymeric insulators also have been to the highest degree observed in glass insulators and in conventional ceramics. Usually, the use of polymeric insulators was observed in areas which has high pollution and high risk of vandalism and in urban areas. With the progression in technology, Oil Field Chemicals its use is pragmatic at all voltage levels. They are sometimes referred to as composite insulators.

Electrical insulator is an important component of the electric power systems of the electric power systems including sub-stations and distribution & transmission lines.

Formation of Insulators

The polymer insulators have a core that is composed of a fiberglass rod closed and covered by the polymer weather sheds. The manufacturers use different shed materials, construction methods and designs. The materials that are used in the basic polymer shed include silicone rubber, EPDC, EPM, CE and PTFE (Teflon). In order to conquer the precise electrical and mechanical properties, the above said materials are combined with several fillers that include also aluminum trihydrate.

Most of the manufacturers make use of different sheds which were slipped over the fiberglass rod. The CE material was cast as one housing on the rod and the manufacturer of the silicone rubber insulator make use of a continuous molding process in order to form one continuous housing on the fiberglass rod.

The end fittings of the metal are attached to the rod by making use of quite a lot of technologies that include compression of the metal end fittings, cutting of the rod end in the form of a cone, inserting the wedges into one fiber glass rod or by attaching the end fittings to the rod using glue.

Both silicone rubber insulators and polymer insulators are the products of composite insulators. However there are differences between silicone rubber insulator, polymer insulator and composite insulator.

The composite insulators have a "core" and "housing". The core is made up of resin-impregnated glass fibers and the housing is manufactured using diverse kinds of materials like elastomers, resins or fluorocarbons.

The polymer insulators, also called non-ceramic insulators is the insulating body that have at least one type of organic based material like HDPE insulator.

The silicone rubber insulators are the kind of insulators where the insulating body is made out of silicone rubber material.

Advantages of Polymer Insulators

Here are some of the advantages of Polymeric insulators.

They prevent flashovers and surface currents by not letting water accumulate on its surface.

Their feature of being light weight enables use of light cranes as their fitment gets easy. It also ensures increased clearance distance between the ground and the conductor.
